The Harmonist Connection
Shakers and Harmonists: Communal Connections and Commonalities
Description
Join us at 6 p.m. CT/7 p.m. ET on November 13, 2024 for a new Harmonist Connection virtual talk by Christian Goodwillie. The Harmonist Connection is a virtual program sponsored by three Harmonist sites: Historic New Harmony, Historic Harmony, and Old Economy Village.
The United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing, or Shakers, and the Harmony Society each originated in Europe. Following their respective immigrations to North America, each became one of the most widely known and successful communal societies in the nineteenth-century United States. This illustrated talk will examine the many interactions between the two groups over the course of nearly 100 years, as well as their theological commonalities.
Christian Goodwillie is the Director and Curator of Special Collections and Archives at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York. Prior to that he was Curator of Collections at Hancock Shaker Village and also served as President of the Communal Studies Association. Goodwillie has published twelve books and numerous article on the Shakers, Freemasonry, and other topics.
